SUMMARY:Learning to Receive
DESCRIPTION:What’s this about? \nThe whole point behind Toronto Joy is coming together to serve\, our time\, our energy\, our presence. But what about receiving? At times I’ve found it hard to receive. \nSometimes\, when someone gives a compliment or offers to help\, something in me still tenses up. I remember one period after being away for a long stretch\, I wasn’t working. Someone offered to pay for something\, and I still wanted to pay myself. I thought letting someone else pay said something bad about me. That was the first time I noticed this pattern in myself so clearly. \nI don’t think I’m the only one who’s felt that. So this week\, we’re bringing it to the group. \nWhat you’ll walk away with: \n\nA better sense of how you personally react to a compliment\, help\, or kindness\nWhy rejecting small kindness can quietly train us to reject bigger things too\nWhy receiving isn’t weakness\, it’s what makes giving sustainable\nA real conversation with others who’ve felt this too\n\nThis is for you if:\nWhether you’re usually the one giving\, or the one on the receiving end\, this is a nice conversation to be part of.

SUMMARY:What Six Year Olds Know That We Forgot
DESCRIPTION:What’s this about? \nA 6 year old boy heard that kids his own age were walking miles every day for water that was still polluted. He didn’t wait until he felt older\, or smarter\, or ready. He just started doing chores to raise money. \nHe raised $70. Today\, that’s grown into clean water for over 1\,617\,615 people\, across 17 countries. His name is Ryan Hreljac. \nThis Saturday\, in our weekly Journey Home gathering\, we’re using his story to talk about something a lot of us struggle with\, starting before we feel ready. \nWhat you’ll walk away with: \n\nWhy waiting to feel ready might be the wrong move\nWhy the real cost of doing something that matters is bigger than you think\, and why that’s not your sign to quit\nWhy the people who go the distance are the ones who ask for help\, not the ones who carry it alone\nA real example of how something small\, done over and over\, can turn into something enormous\n\nThis is for you if:\nYou’ve ever wanted to help but felt too small\, too late\, or not qualified enough to start. Come as you are. Nobody shows up to this feeling fully ready. \nNew here?\nThe Journey Home is our weekly gathering\, open to anyone\, volunteer or not\, looking to sit with real questions in a space that’s warm\, honest\, and never spiritual or heavy.

SUMMARY:Volunteering at The Stop
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nABOUT THE EVENT \n\n\n\n \nA few of you have asked for more regular ways to get involved and give back. One opportunity we found is The Stop\, a community food centre right here in West Toronto. \nWhat The Stop does \nThe Stop runs Emergency Food Access\, Community Building\, and Urban Agriculture programs across three locations (1884 Davenport Rd\, 601 Christie St\, and 729 St Clair West). Their Urban Agriculture program includes the Green Barn\, a greenhouse and year round farmers market\, plus community gardens nearby. Produce grown there goes straight back into their food programs\, feeding neighbours who need it. \nCheck them out for yourself: thestop.org \nVolunteering \nThis is for anyone looking for an ongoing\, regular commitment. Must be 16 or older. The Stop asks for a minimum of 3 months\, and you’ll pick one of two shift options: \n– Weekly shift\, one 3 to 5 hour shift a week. \n– Substitute shift\, twice a month. \nShifts run weekdays 8am to 4pm\, with some Saturday availability at the Farmers’ Market. \nYou’ll apply directly through The Stop using the form below. They run their own info sessions\, interviews\, and a trial shift before placing you in a role. \nApply here: https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=NmKTrxcKeEGvB4KcahuM6KJnK196NcxOrgOXRUHS1_5UMDIxNVJYMEY5QktRUTJQR0dHME1UVzJCTyQlQCN0PWcu&route=shorturl \nPrefer something one time instead of ongoing? The Stop also runs group volunteer sessions\, hands in the dirt for a couple hours. It’s $100 a person\, with a $1\,000 minimum total\, so we’d need around 10 people to make it happen (up to 15 max). \nIf that sounds fun\, send us an email at hello@torontojoy.org \nReach out if you’ve got questions. \nThanks. \n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Service and fatigue: how to keep them apart.
DESCRIPTION:I found at times I would give so much of myself that I would feel worn down\, or like I can’t go on. Either I wasn’t doing it in the right spirit\, or I was just giving so much I couldn’t sustain. So where is the balance of doing and being\, or rather helping and yet still taking care of yourself and those you care about? \nThis Saturday we’re going deeper than just talking about it. We’ll look at real research on this\, including work from Adam Grant\, an organizational psychologist at Wharton who’s spent years studying why some people who give wear down\, and others don’t. \nHere’s some of what we’ll dig into: \n– Why it’s not really about how much you give\n– Why the exact same job\, the exact same shift\, can wear one person down and not another\n– When it’s actually healthier to bring someone else in\, instead of carrying it all yourself\n– Why “fill your own cup first” might not be quite right\, and what the research actually says instead \nWe are serving\, yet still serving ourselves… a healthy balance. \nThis is for anyone who gives themselves to others\, paid or unpaid. Volunteering\, nursing\, teaching\, coaching\, caregiving\, or just being the one people lean on. \n📅 Saturday\, July 18th\n🕚 11am – 12pm EDT

SUMMARY:Toronto Joy Social: Meet\, Mingle\, and a Walk Along the Water
DESCRIPTION:Hi everyone\, \nCome spend a Sunday with us. Meet some good people\, share a few laughs\, and be part of something good. \nThis is a Toronto Joy social\, a chance to get to know the people behind this community. You don’t need to have volunteered with us before. Come as you are. \nBring a friend if you’d like. Everyone’s welcome. \nHere’s what the day looks like: \n✦ Meet at The Well. We’ll start with easy introductions and a few icebreakers\, so no one’s standing around feeling like a stranger. We’ll have name tags too\, so it’s easy to find us and know who you’re talking to. Grab a bite if you’d like\, or save your appetite for the waterfront. Either way\, settle in and let’s get to know each other. \n✦ I’ll share what we’re dreaming up. The projects ahead\, where Toronto Joy is going\, and how we’re growing so we can serve the community in real ways. I’d love to hear what you’d want to be part of too. \n✦ Then we walk down to Harbourfront together. At 4pm there’s a free concert at the Toronto Music Garden\, right on the water. Two brothers from Santiago de Cuba bringing the warmth of Cuban music. The waterfront’s alive that day with soccer\, art\, and music. Stay as long as you like and soak it all up. No rush to head off. \nNo need to register. Just show up. \nWhere to meet (inside The Well\, food court across from Shoppers): \n\nHead toward La Plume or The Dorset restaurant\, then turn toward the statue and take the stairs down to the lower level.\nAcross from Shoppers\, you’ll see the entrance to The Well’s food court.\nHead in\, and the long tables will be on your left. That’s us.

SUMMARY:Both Sides of Service
DESCRIPTION:Toronto Joy is built on service. That means showing up for someone else\, helping however we can. \nBut there’s another part of it I want to share more of. Serving ourselves too\, through our own growth\, character\, knowledge\, things like that. Helping people does that\, but this session does too. Just turned more inward. \nI’ve found that when I take real time to get clearer\, more focused\, and more grounded\, I bring more back to everyone around me. More patience. More presence. More joy. \nI’ve found meditation adds so much value to this development. I’m not talking religion or anything like that. Just being connected to yourself in a better way. \nThat’s a part of what this is for. \nThis Saturday\, 11am to 12pm\, I’ll walk us through the 6 Phase Meditation\, built by Vishen Lakhiani. It moves through six areas: gratitude\, forgiveness\, imagining where you’re headed\, setting an intention\, wishing good things for others\, and then for yourself. It’s very practical. \nAfterward we’ll sit quietly with soft instrumental music playing in the background. \nAthletes and public figures who’ve used the 6 Phase Meditation\, and found it so impactful:\n✦ Tony Gonzalez\, NFL Hall of Famer\n✦ Reggie Jackson\, NBA point guard\n✦ Bianca Andreescu\, Canadian pro tennis player \nThis one runs longer than what we usually do\, about 30 to 40 minutes of meditation (yes\, you can move and come back\, whatever is comfortable)\, then a short discussion at the end. Only if you want to share. No pressure either way. \nNo registration needed for this one. Online\, social gathering\, open to everyone. I only ask for registration at our volunteer shifts\, since those need me to know who’s on site\, for safety. \nCome as you are. No meditation experience needed.\n✦ Bring something comfortable to sit on\, or a chair is fine\n✦ Bring water if you’d like\n✦ This is a really nice space together\, not therapy or professional treatment \nLooking forward to sitting with you all this Saturday.
